A response to “John Mancer”

6 11 2008

The following is my response to the comment made on “Bad Idea” by John Mancer.

The original comment is as follows:

“My apologies. Anyways, I have a bit of high expectation’s and have been fed up with the influx of fairly poor quality Machinima, so that biased it a fair bit. Anyways here’s a few of the reasons I found it bad: Weapon Menu visible at times, general choppiness, Gm_Construct, only made using players (No scripted NPC’s), horrible posing at times, using the physgun to imitate character movement, bad faceposing, bad camera transitions, “Camera Man” or spectator visible (around 1:30). For a first attempt it’s good, but I guess I’m just so fed up with all the frag videos to music, horrible beginner attempts done by prepubescents, and general shittiness of late. Once again, my apologies for being so harsh, but I did give you 2 stars instead of 1, meaning there is hope if you work on it.”

“My apologies. Anyways, I have a bit of high expectation’s and have been fed up with the influx of fairly poor quality Machinima, so that biased it a fair bit.”

Understood. A movie was posted a few days later that was just videos of some guy playing consrtuct (“4th survivor”or something like that) with bad camera angles and framerates. I hope this is something more then that, and actually provided you with *some* entertainment.

“Anyways here’s a few of the reasons I found it bad: Weapon Menu visible at times”

Yep, that was my fault as the camera man. I should have caught that and re-shot the shot.

“Gm_Construct”

Again, this is my fault. Erik was over at my house for the last few shots (my fault again. We had to do it at my house becuase I had refused to film before that). Being at my house, we had none of the maps and just needed to finish at that point.

” only made using players (No scripted NPC’s),”

This wasn’t made using the SDK, so we could do it as well as, say, civil protection. However, even if we had used  npc control, I fail to see any spots where NPC’s would have been more suited to the task.

” horrible posing at times”

I do admit that we could have spent some more time posing at some parts, but overall I think that the posing fits the style of the song.

“using the physgun to imitate character movement”

We did this on purpose. It’s not ment to look real. It’s meant to be funny. Again, we could have used NPC Control to make movement if we had really wanted to. But we were copying some styles seen in machinima such as The Idiots Of Garry’s Mod.

” bad faceposing”

See above section of posing.

” bad camera transitions”

I agree with this. We tried at some points to have camera transitions, but as you saw they didn’t work out to well.

“”Camera Man” or spectator visible (around 1:30). “

That was one of our friends messing around. He is also visable around the second “Bad Idea” refrain. It was late, and we just needed to finish at that point.

“For a first attempt it’s good, but I guess I’m just so fed up with all the frag videos to music, horrible beginner attempts done by prepubescents, and general shittiness of late. Well, this isn’t a frag video put to music, at least I hope its not. Like I said in my original reply, we’ll keep working and making sure to avoid the things mentioned in this post. Thanks for watching at least.

One more thing. We have 400(!) + views now. Wayyyyy more then we had thought would watch our first machinima. Thanks to all who watched.

Stuff in development… maybe

Hey everyone (and by everyone I mean the few people who will read this), this is Erik. Bad Idea is up on www.machinima.com, and so far it’s not doing too bad with about 250 views. As of right now, it’s the most recent Half-Life machinima to be posted, so check it out! Last night in Garry’s Mod, we had a So Much Wasted Time meeting, which turned out to be not so productive. However, we may be working on a Garry’s Mod sketch show kind of thing which seemed to revolve around chairs, but then the whole meeting kind of fell apart. I’ll keep you posted on any new videos (machinima or not) we start working on. Oh, and as for the GMod Arena video, I have no idea when Andrew is going to edit that, but it’s up to him since I don’t have the footage. I guess that’s all the news I have for now, so keep watching for more updates!
